Thranduil awoke in a field of flowers, the smell of trees and pollen in the air. Strange, he thought. The last thing he remembered was staring out at the sea, waiting for the ship that would someday reunite him with his love.

He sat up, trying to gather his surroundings.

Where am I? I need to…

Haldir lie in his bed, his body weakened from all the stress.

He dozed off here and there, having small dreams of kisses under the stars, and proposals lit with lanterns. The good times.

He wished Thranduil knew how hard he tried to make everyday a good day when they were together. He tried so hard…

Thranduil ran through the gates, his guards grinned happily, confused but so happy to see him again. He kept running, and didn’t stop until he got to his chambers.

Knock. Knock. Knock.

"Come in," he muttered quietly, believing it to be the healer. "I just want water, I don’t want the medicine."

"I’m afraid I don’t have any water….just apologies."

Their eyes met and Haldir’s chest began to heave with new sobs. He rested his head in defeat against the headboard. “No, no, wake up.”

It wasn’t a memory. This felt real. He needed to wake up now before he got too attached to the dream.

"I am…so sorry", he said as he made his way over, his voice cracking. "I’m so sorry, Haldir. I..I’m home."

"Please go," he spoke to the supposed dream Thranduil, his hands covering his pale face. "I cannot wake up and face your absence again. Please."

"It’s me, meleth nin." He knelt beside the bed, touching his face lightly. "It’s me."

"I know…but it’s not really you.” he sighed, opening his eyes slowly.

"How can I show you it is?" He smiled sadly, so happy to see those beautiful eyes once again.

He shook his head, the brief change in lighting contrasting the dark under-eye circles from his lifeless skin.

He swallowed hard, fighting back sobs for a moment. “Just come back to me soon.”

"Here….before I go", she said, lifting his chin with her hand. She took a lantern from her robes, the same lantern Haldir had crushed. "It took some time, but it looks almost good as new I would think."

His heart felt heavy, if only all of his wrongdoings could be as easily repaired

He held it close to him, remembering the smile that Thranduil had given when he gave him this lantern.

My bennig…

She smiled one last time, standing up straight. “Take care of him, Haldir. And take care of Legolas. They love you so much.” She sighed, taking her last moments to spin around, taking in the halls one last time. “Goodbye, Haldir.”

"Thank you, Nessiel." He smiled sadly, his lip quivering. "Tell him I’m waiting."

"A very cruel one indeed if it were one", she said softly, her eyes never losing their worry or care. "I don’t have much time, Haldir. I was permitted leave for a very short time. This is important."

"You can come back?" he asked softly, disregarding her words.

He had a one track mind right now, and it was going a million miles an hour.

"I can not come and go as I please. If I could, I would be with Legolas every second of the day." She smiled at the thought of that happening. "I was permitted to come back because it is not Thranduil’s time to sail. And it is not your time to fade. I am here because I needed to try and tell you to hold on, hold on even just a little longer. He needs to be healed, and he will be returned to you."

"You can come back….and you did not ever return to him? Not once?" his voice sounding like a mix between anger and sadness.

He needed her so much, he loved her so much. And she left him alone?

"I have never come back directly, no. This is my first time, stepping foot in these halls in many a year." She shuffled her feet, sensing his emotions. "I can look from afar. I watched Legolas grow, and I watched time pass and shadow fall. I watched Thranduil coming home  from Lorien giggling and smiling. I watched a fateful night during mereth en gilith. I watched the wedding." She smiled. "I am so happy to know that he was able to find his one. Some of us are never quite so lucky. I am happy that it is you."

"You’ve watched…." he trailed off, so many emotions running through his exhausted mind.

"I know that my intentions are failing, I did not come here to talk about me and to trouble your mind even more. I’ve come to ask you to hold on. Hold on for Thranduil, for yes, Haldir he does love you, so very much, and hold on for Legolas. Hold on for your son. And most importantly, hold on for yourself."

Haldir closed his eyes, this had to be a dream. She couldn’t be here.

"He left me alone. He doesn’t love me." he opened his eyes again, and they were filled with tears. "….He went back for you."

He was quiet for a while, looking down at his hands in his lap. “What should I hold on for?”

She sighed, laughing softly “Thranduil Oropherion did not come back for me.” She moved forward, cautiously resting her hand on his. “Haldir, listen to me. He had to go. He had to be healed and this was the only way for him to be well again. The sea did call him, Haldir, but it was not to stay. I have never seen a love like the one that you and he have for one another. He wanted to feel okay again, not leave you for good.” She looked at him for a moment before continuing. “When he arrived, he greeted us, and then he went to the shore and sat. That’s all he did. We went to him, myself and several of his friends from battle, and he simply said he was going to wait for you and he wasnt leaving. I told him it could take ages, and he said he didnt mind, that he would sit there and wait just the same.”

Haldir closed his eyes, the tears beginning to fall.

He was frozen. He didn’t know what to do.

She reached up, gently wiping his tears. “If you believe in nothing else, Haldir, believe in his love. If there is one thing I know, it is that he loves you.” She laughed slightly, looking down for a moment before looking up. “I am rather jealous”, she said smiling. “I was never able to find a love like that. I am so happy that he did. And I m so happy that you love Thranduil and Legolas both.”

"I miss him." he whimpered pathetically. If seconds felt like an eternity, he couldn’t even fathom waiting to be called.

"I know you do, I know." She hugged him, pulling him close. She couldn’t help it. It was in her nature to be caring and nurturing. "He will come back to you, you just need to be strong, only a little while longer. Think of hen he returns, think of how happy you will be! He doesn’t know that he is allowed to come back. I’m sure he’s still waiting right now. He’s going to be so excited to be with you again Haldir, hes going to be excited, and he’s going to be well."

"He can’t come back." He mumbled hopelessly. "He has to wait til I go there."

"He can. It is not his time. Everyone has a time. It is not his time. He needed to be healed. He nearly faded, he needed to come to Valinor to be healed. The Valar can see what takes place, you know. There is still so much greatness left in him." She smiled. "There was always greatness in him. He is not finished his work  here, and either are you. The Valar know this, and he WILL be returned to you. I am here because I can not let you fade. He is coming, Haldir. You must wait a little longer. He will come home."

He shook his head, his tears falling into his lap.

"He wont be coming home. But it’s alright. Legolas will be alright…"

Haldir's eyebrows furrowed, and he leaned forward in his chair. "What kind of joke is this?"
